Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I've been busy traveling to Germany, working on my skull-drawing skills (mostly ugly practice), and learned a while ago that I'm pregnant with my first child.
Learning new drawing skills is very humbling. I'm very used to being able to draw or paint whatever I feel like, having to start from scratch and practice a lot is reminding me of the basics.
Here's a teaser, the first decent skull/face I drew today after about 30 attempts:

I'm working through Andrew Loomis' amazing textbook on drawing hands and faces. In the "sets" section you can see a drawing of variety of skull shapes, one of the first exercises in the text.
You can download Andrew Loomis' excellent art-instruction textbooks from a link I posted to the blog.. They're public domain!

A drawing of an owl has been added to the ink section. It involves two of my favorite things: picky detail with black ink and large blocks of color.
There's a post over at the blog showing the process.
August 30th, 2011
Go check out the blog at kandeart.blogspot.com, I had a business philosophy moment of clarity while trying to draw a foot.

There's a new gouache and ink piece in the other media section, a sleepy bear resting in a field. Also, today marks the launch of Http://kandeart.blogspot.com, my new art blog! You can see in-progress photos of drawings, commentary on technique, and sometimes corny jokes. Today I updated with a very thorough post on how I painted the new bear piece.

I've added a drawing I began last week. I drew a baby sea turtle and it was my husband's suggestion to draw him flying through space. The result, "Bernard's Dream", is one of my favorite recent drawings. It can be found in the ink section.

Updated the ink drawings section with a bear.

A new drawing, norma lateralis, has been added to the anatomy series. It can be found in the "sets" section.
Does anyone know of an utterly bulletproof, undissolvable black ink with a precision pen tip?
I find that every black pen I use dissolves when colored over with Prismacolor if I'm using translucent marker paper. Email me if you have a reccomendation.

Christmas decorating is done for the season!

This is the second year we've decorated the string tree. Icicle-style lights work the best and they don't do any harm to the tree as long as you're careful putting them on. My husband gets co-artist credit on this one; I made the string tree and he lit it up.
November 29, 2010
Tonight I added a new anatomy drawing to the "sets" page. It's a labeled diagram of the major arteries of the human neck/skull.
On a personal note, my dad and I just passed the six month mark for my having given him my kidney. We've both had our follow-up testing and are doing extremely well.
November 18, 2010
I finished my commission! Here is a low-quality photo preview:

Now I just have to build a frame and make the frame look like a TV. My friend, Ray, commissioned this to hang on the front of his TV. It's supposed to look like you're looking through the TV at people watching TV in a mirror universe.
November 13, 2010
I'm still working on a commissioned painting, so I haven't been drawing much. However, today there is an update to the ink section, a drawing of a dandelion. I found a very old book about common weeds from South Dakota at my grandparents' house, and it's proven very inspiring.
October
Updates may be sporadic in the coming weeks as I am currently focusing on a commissioned painting. However, prints of previous work and many originals are still available for purchase.

A drawing of a giraffe has been added to the ink section. It's a big one, too. I usually work fairly small in ink, 11x14 or 9x12. However, this one is a 14x17. I had a lot of fun with it and was a little less controlled than usual with my lines and colors.
September 5th 2010
A round owl has been added to the ink section.
September 2nd
A baffled dodo has been added to the ink section. He was done without a photo reference, which is somewhat rare for me. I had a lot of fun with the texture.

A new drawing of a red bird can be seen in the inks section.
July 14th 2010
Once my dad told me that he would enjoy it if I drew pictures of animals smoking cigarettes. He thought it would be interesting if done in my style. Now whenever I can't think of what to draw I sketch some animal indulging in nicotine. It has become one of my favorite reoccuring bits of subject matter.
This is relevant as a new drawing of a smoking elephant has been added to the ink section.

Beginning at noon central time I will place certain of my artworks into the bargain bin at reduced prices. The first five people to purchase art on that date will have their choice (in order of purchase).
I will reveal them here on my website as they are won and selected.
